Rails to-Trails Conservancy, Washington, DC

The Rails-to-Trails Conservancy mural was created for the organization’s new national offices in downtown Washington DC. The mural is situated at the main entrance of the offices, visible to all visitors and staff. It is also plainly visible from the main conference room, which is enclosed by glass walls. It was important that the mural appropriately capture the passion and ideals of the organization, and represent its members and mission. I worked closely with staff to develop a design concept that would meet these goals and enliven the space. The final piece includes bicycles, hikers, roller bladers, trains, urban and rural areas, bridges, waterways, flora and fauna, and a portrait of Duke Ellington, his likeness captured as a train passenger. (The offices are located in the Duke Ellington Building in downtown DC). These varied elements are woven together into a cohesive scene that can be viewed during meetings and emphasize the beauty and benefits of rail-trails.
